Hosted by the American Cancer Society, the Relay for Life of East Jefferson is a community effort to honor cancer survivors and fight back against the grim disease.
The location for the event will be at Spare Time in Trussville. “We chose[that location] due to the wonderful facility, indoors and outdoors, their willingness to partner with us and its centralized location for all communities in East Jefferson,” said Elizabeth Pridgen, a local volunteer with the Relay for Life program. “Our hope is that more participants from East Jefferson County will join us for this celebration.”
According to the news release, Relay for Life “serves as a chance to honor those who are currently fighting cancer, those who have beat it and those brave individuals who have lost their lives to the unforgiving disease.” Relay of Life charges itself with building bridges in a community and to facilitate “a coming together” for cancer survivors, their loved ones and the broader neighborhood. The run serves as a way to “raise money to fight a disease that has claimed too many.”
This year, Phillip Acton and his daughter Callie will serve as honorary co-chairs for the event as well as host a team at relay. Both have been diagnosed with cancer in the last two years.
To begin the event, there will be a Survivor Lap, where cancer survivors are “honored for their courage” by their families, friends and other loved ones. Later in the evening, a luminaria ceremony will be held, featuring a candlelight vigil in the honor and memory of “all who have been affected by cancer.”
A survivor and caregiver dinner took place on April 17 at the Trussville Civic Center sponsored by the Trussville Civitan Club.
Funds from the run will “allow the American Cancer Society to continue their work to provide services to cancer patients and their families. “Nearly fourteen million cancer survivors will add another candle to their birthday cakes this year because of this work,” according to the release. Relay for Life of East Jefferson encompasses communities such as Trussville, Pinson, Clay, Center Point and many more in the district.
The Relay for Life event will be held on Friday, April 22, at 4:30 p.m. at Spare Time in Trussville, 3600 Roosevelt Blvd. For more information, visit relayforlife.org/eastjeffersonal or find them on Facebook.
