Birmingham blues-rock group Royal & Toulouse have been making music for nearly a decade. Headed up by vocalist Milyn Satterfield Little — and boasting a lineup of bassist Ricky Little, drummer Dylan Johnson and guitarist Christian Herring — the band have honed in on a sound that’s a fusion of wide-ranging Southern influences.
The group’s latest EP, The Old and the New, was released in November and features six new tracks from the band. Now, the group have premiered the music video for the EP’s final track, “Cursed by the Moonlight,” recorded by filmmaker Joshua Shoemaker. Watch the video — and check out our conversation with singer Milyn Satterfield Little — below.
Weld: What was the inspiration for this song?
Milyn Satterfield Little: This is actually a true story. When I had a brief stint in New Orleans, I ran into the French quarter legend, Blind Boy Troy. I wrote a song about the experience and then merged it with Ricky’s song that he wrote with a guitar he found in the dumpster behind Lorino’s.
Weld: Talk a little about the filming of this video. Was it a difficult process in such a confined space?
MSL: This was an idea from Joshua Shoemaker. The set up was actually pretty easy. We opened the windows, pulled out the screens, and Joshua jumped from spot to spot.
Weld: This is a live version of the song, right? Or has it been dubbed over?
MSL: Funny you ask. We were very nervous about the sound inside of a metal pill, but it’s actually all live, no overdubs. We have been extremely fortunate to work with amazing sound and production guys. The sound you hear on the EP is from [producer] Les Nuby at Ol Elegante [Studio], mastered by Jason Hamric. In this video, Joshua had a mobile studio set up, ran by Nathaniel Nelson of White Violets, from Athens, Georgia. Nate ran sound for all three songs in the video series and blew us away.
Weld: This video was filmed in an Airstream trailer, and much of your band’s aesthetic revolves around Airstreams. What is it about Airstreams that you’re drawn to?
MSL: The Airstream is “Bed Zeppelin.” The band is on its third Airstream. This one is a 1963 Overlander. Ricky has a great eye for diamonds in the rough, and I’m the interior designer. Bed Zeppelin is painted solid sparkle-gold inside. Being on the road, we decided that we needed a place to sleep and store gear — and we have our own (golden) green room at every show.
