On Christmas Eve eve, Dec. 23, The Syndicate Lounge will be abuzz with a unique sort of holiday cheer as Goulash Comedy throws their first-ever (and Birmingham’s only) Festivus dinner and celebration.
Even though Festivus is well known to Seinfeld viewers, the secular holiday tradition began much earlier, in 1966, in the home of author and editor Daniel O’Keefe as a response to family tension that mounted “from December to May,” according to Wikipedia. When Dan O’Keefe, son of the Father of Festivus, introduced the world to the anti-commercialist festival by detailing its traditions in an episode of Seinfeld he wrote, nonconformists, curmudgeons and holiday-enthusiasts alike had one more reason to be jolly in December.
Eschewing convention, Festivus comes with its own set of customary practices, which Goulash will attempt to enact, according to Goulash Comedy host Christopher Ivey. A classic Festivus dinner will be served consisting of meatloaf served on a piece of lettuce followed by a dessert of “Customary M&M Decorated Cake.” During dinner partygoers will be able to watch the origin story of Festivus with an airing of “The Strike,” the Seinfeld episode that made Festivus a household name.
Next, the Telling of Past Festivus Miracles will star local storytellers sharing Festivus miracles. The Airing of Grievances will follow as an open-mic venting session followed by Feats of Strength, traditionally, a wrestling match.
“The head of the household selects one person at the Festivus celebration and challenges them to a wrestling match,” according to Wikipedia. “Tradition states Festivus is not over until the head of the household is pinned.”
“Since our insurance won’t allow us to actually wrestle in the venue, we will be conducting the Feats of Strength through Mario Kart (N64) projected onto the stage,” Ivey said in a press release. “All challengers welcome. Start practicing, loser.”
The Syndicate Lounge is located at 433 20th St. S. Festivus begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5. For more information, visit the event on Facebook.
