It is, perhaps, the oldest bar in the Birmingham metro area. And it might have one of the best burgers in the area, too. But if you want to taste it, you better get out to Trussville soon, because Velma’s Place might not be open much longer.

Velma's is known as a late-night beer joint, burger joint and karaoke bar, and it might just be the oldest bar in the Birmingham area. Photo from Velma's Place's Facebook profile.

Landlord Terry Simmons has informed the owners of Trussville landmark beer joint Velma’s Place that they need to vacate the property soon. The Trussville Tribune reports that Simmons accepted an offer from Matthew Norman to start a seafood restaurant at the location. The rent will be the same, Simmons told the Tribune, but Norman is investing more than $70,000 in fixing the place up.

Depending on who tells you the story, Velma’s was started in Trussville in 1938 or 1945 in a building near the current establishment.
