Birmingham patrolman Curtis Thornton has been charged with arson for fires set in Warrior and is the lead suspect in a spate of arsons in Ensley. All of the houses were abandoned, and Birmingham Mayor William Bell says the city will begin demolishing them on Tuesday. As many as 1,800 homes in Birmingham are in need of demolition, city officials said.
