Alabama State Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice is coming to Birmingham Thursday, and he’s bringing his investigators.

Alabama State Schools Superintendent Tommy Bice

In a memo released Wednesday, Bice assured the public that the state’s investigation of the Birmingham Board of Education will be conducted without “preconceived assumptions about any particular individual.” Bice also said he will meet with the Birmingham board Thursday in a closed meeting to explain the investigation and introduce the investigators.

Bice announced the state’s investigation after attending a Birmingham board meeting in which the board twice motioned to fire Birmingham Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon, but both attempts failed due to procedural rules. Several board members invited state intervention at that meeting and self-reported the board to the state’s ethics commission.
