Rep. Patricia Todd (D-Birmingham) wants to repeal a 1992 Alabama law that specifies how sex education is taught in the state. For one thing, she says – according to the Anniston Star – curriculum decisions should be made by educators, not legislators. Todd also finds it insulting that teachers are required to tell students that gay sex is illegal, even though that Alabama statute has not been enforced since 2003, when a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a Texas case prevented states from persecuting consenting gay couples. In an editorial, the Star expresses support for Todd and describes the alliance she seems to be making on this issue with Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin, a conservative Indian Springs Republican.
