Editor of new media, Weld for Birmingham

Alabama Senator Shadrack McGill is still defending his comments about teacher and legislators’ pay. At a meeting Monday night, he said some people he’s talked to were shocked when they found out lawmakers make only $50,000 per year. Left in Alabama was there and has posted this video. (Be sure to follow the link for, if nothing else, the photo of McGill.) Meanwhile, he calls the media “one-sided” and says he was “sabotaged” for his comments last week. Near the end of the video, McGill suggests he should probably quit defending himself.

Sen. Shadrack McGill now says his comments calling teacher raises (but not legislative) raises “unbiblical” were taken out of context and were really about “balance.”

State Sen. Shadrack McGill calls teacher pay raises ‘unbiblical,’ defends raises for lawmakers

Speaking at a prayer breakfast this week, State Sen. Shadrack McGill, R-Woodville, (neither name nor hometown made up) said that raising teacher pay is against the teachings of the Bible because it would attract people not “called” to teach, the Dekalb County Times journal reported Tuesday. In the very same speech, McGill defended a 62 percent pay hike for state lawmakers, saying it protected them from corruption.
