Former Jefferson County Commissioner John Katopodis (Federal Inmate 27144-038) had appealed to the United States Supreme Court to overturn his conviction on federal mail and wire fraud charges. The Birmingham News reports that today the court refused to hear his appeal. Also, a federal magistrate has refused to appoint Katopodis a new lawyer.
In 2009, Katopodis was convicted of funneling public funds through a bogus charity and then using that money for private purposes, including trips to casinos.
