Jefferson County began handing out pink slips today. The Sheriff’s Department avoided layoffs by reducing employee hours to 32 per week, and 177 vacant positions will remain unfilled. The commission had set a dollar amount for total cuts of more than $12 million until the end of the fiscal year.
