You know The Gaddabouts even if you don’t think that is the case. In fact, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say they’re a modern-day supergroup. With the exception of vocalist Edie Brickell, the quartet – drummer Steve Gadd, guitarist Andy Fairweather-Low and bassist Pino Palladino – consists of players that have primarily forged lengthy careers backing legendary names. Collectively, Brickell’s bandmates have backed Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, The Who, John Mayer and B.B. King to name only a few. Look Out Now (Racecarlotta Records), the band’s sophomore release, gives listeners a healthy dose of music sprawled over two CDs and 17 tracks. From the first notes of the opening track, “Meat On Your Bones,” the material here is loose, spontaneous and inviting. In the album’s press release, Brickell offers, “It’s a tribute and a nod to the days when bands played so well they were recorded live in the studio together – a live performance comes through on every track.” On the whole, Look Out Now works because the players effectively straddle the line between being noticed and playing as a band.
