Over frittata and espresso at Trattoria Centrale this morning, I chanced to overhear a member of the waitstaff advising a couple of out-of-towners on how they might spend a Monday afternoon in Birmingham.
“Well, there’s the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute,” Caitlin said.
I butted in from two tables away. “It’s closed on Mondays.”
“What about the museum of art?” she asked.
“Closed on Mondays,” I said. “How about Vulcan?”
The visitors looked over and smiled, but Caitlin shook her head. “They don’t have transportation,” she said. “They could take the Dart to Five Points but then they’d have to walk up Red Mountain. I suggested Railroad Park.”
“Oh, good,” I said. “That’s good. How about the Alabama Theatre? They could probably walk around in there.”
This made both guys smile even bigger. “I’m actually playing there tonight,” one said.
“Oh, you are?”
“I am.”
“Who are you?” I asked. That got a laugh.
“I’m a musician,” he said.
I quickly pulled up alabamatheatre.com. “Are you part of NeedToBreathe?”
“No,” he said with a polite smile. “I’m the guy opening for them.”
After watching the video below, I figure I made him feel right at home in Birmingham.
Ben, I hope you found something to do today and that you and NeedtoBreathe have a great show.
