John Douglas Powers, assistant professor of sculpture at UAB, says the ideas that inspire and inform his work come from myriad sources.
“Geology, poetry, history, myth, language, literature, technology — all of these things intersect in the studio,” Powers says. “But sound and movement are the two elements that keep reoccurring.”
“Terra Incognita,” an exhibition of Powers’ kinetic sculpture, opens Friday, Jan. 13, with a reception from 5-9 p.m. in the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, 900 13th St. South.
John Fields, interim director of the gallery, just sent me this splendid video about the exhibit, which runs through Feb. 4.
