Few artists have been able to seamlessly cross over Secular and Christian music lines. Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard were able to do so, but it’s a short list by any measure. The South Carolina-based quartet NEEDTOBREATHE can be added to the crossover conversation, finding popularity with both audiences. On Monday, February 20, [...]

Once slated for demolition before community support demanded it be saved, the old Fire Station 22 is now home to Bogue's restaurant. Over at the Terminal, Andre Natta reports that the restaurant isn't set up to use credit cards yet, but other than that, it was serving breakfast to customers Monday morning. Over frittata and espresso at Trattoria Centrale this morning, I chanced to overhear a member of the waitstaff advising a couple of out-of-towners on how they might spend a Monday afternoon in Birmingham.
“Well, there’s the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute,” Caitlin said.
I butted in from two tables away. “It’s closed on Mondays.”
“What about the museum of art?” she asked.
“Closed on Mondays,” I said. “How about Vulcan?”
The visitors looked over and smiled, but Caitlin shook her head. “They don’t have transportation,” she said. “They could take the Dart to Five Points but then they’d have to walk up Red Mountain. I suggested Railroad Park.”
“Oh, good,” I said. “That’s good. How about the Alabama Theatre? They could probably walk around in there.”
This made both guys smile even bigger. “I’m actually playing there tonight,” one said.
“Oh, you are?”
“I am.”
“Who are you?” I asked. That got a laugh.
“I’m a musician,” he said.
I quickly pulled up alabamatheatre.com. “Are you part of NeedToBreathe?”
“No,” he said with a polite smile. “I’m the guy opening for them.”
After watching the video below, I figure I made him feel right at home in Birmingham.
Ben, I hope you found something to do today and that you and NeedtoBreathe have a great show.

The list of regional musicians that have forged solo careers after finding success in ensembles is a lengthy one. Singer/songwriter Jimbo Mathus [...]

Let’s get one thing straight – Yonder Mountain String Band (YMSB) isn’t your grandfather’s string band. On Sunday, February 12, YMSB will return to Birmingham for an all-ages show in the Workplay Soundstage. Enlisting the aid of [...]
