Review: The return of The Gaddabouts

You know The Gaddabouts even if you don’t think that is the case. In fact, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say they’re a modern-day supergroup. With the exception of vocalist Edie Brickell, the quartet – drummer Steve Gadd, guitarist Andy Fairweather-Low and bassist Pino Palladino – consists of players that have primarily forged lengthy [...]

Lukas Nelson’s Family Tradition

He may have a famous father, but Lukas Nelson – son of Willie – isn’t resting on his laurels or family name. Fronting the quartet Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, the younger Nelson offers a gritty sound that blends Rock and Country. On Monday, May 7, Nelson will perform at Workplay with Indian [...]

Mississippi native Paul Thorn will appear in Birmingham at WorkPlay on May 11 in support of his new CD, What the Hell Is Going On?

A heritage of pimps and preachers: Songwriter Paul Thorn draws on both sides of life

Before Tupelo, Miss., singer/songwriter Paul Thorn embarked on a music career, he was best known as a ninth-ranked U.S. middleweight boxer who survived a nationally televised match against the legendary Roberto Duran.

The best and most entertaining thing you’ll see all day, period, exclamation point

It’s difficult to explain how awesome this video is, but I’ll try. For one, there’s people — grown men and women, presumably with friends and families — dressed up like American Gladiators contestants. Second, they’re doing aerobics — well, actually, they’re dancing, badly. Third, it’s the ’80s. And fourth, TV’s Alan Thicke hosts, and he tries (and fails) at telling jokes.

Basically, this video has everything, and we just had to share it with you.

I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT THE  AWESOME SOUNDTRACK! You’re a champion! Champion!

Please enjoy responsibly.

Iron & Wine returns to Birmingham

It’s hard to believe that Iron & Wine – the band moniker for singer/songwriter Sam Beam – has been releasing albums for a decade. Known for a sparse sound on earlier recordings, the band has gravitated to a full sound as heard on its most recent studio release, 2011′s Kiss Each Other Clean. On Thursday, [...]

Concert Shots: Mickey Hart at Workplay 4-22-12

It isn’t every Sunday night that members of the Grateful Dead and Widespread Panic share the stage at Workplay. But on Sunday, April 22, drummer Mickey Hart brought an 8-piece band to town that included Panic bassist Dave Schools. Playing to a packed house, Hart and his band performed Dead classics alongside the Worldbeat material [...]

American Reunion

American Reunion is a pleasant reminder of the past but little else

American Reunion brings back all the characters you remember from American Pie, but the movie is too busy reminding us of the past to give them anything new or interesting to do.

Wrath of the Titans

Wrath of the Titans makes mild improvement over Clash

Sam Worthington growls at CGI, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes have big fake beards and there are some pretty nifty action scenes in this sequel.

Catching up with Tommy Womack

It isn’t often that a musician is just as well-known for a book he has written as the songs he has recorded. But, in Tommy Womack’s case, that happens to be the story. In 1997, Womack – then a member of the Kentucky-based band Government Cheese – penned his group’s biography titled Cheese Chronicles. Part how-to [...]

Concert Shots: Alabama Shakes at Workplay 3-31-12

Few emerging bands have the momentum of Alabama Shakes and the Athens-based quartet showed us why on Saturday, March 31. Playing to a sold-out crowd in the Workplay Soundstage, the band performed tracks from its upcoming full-length debut, Boys & Girls, set for release on April 10.                 [...]
