As the particularly grueling 2016 presidential campaign marches onward into the final month, 17 Birmingham-area cities will be holding runoff elections on Tuesday Oct. 4.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for voters to cast their ballots.
Perhaps the runoff election that is making the biggest splash is in Hoover for the city council place 1 seat. Dr. Trey Lott, who served for 10 years on the council before resigning in 2015 to relocate his family to Alabaster, will be facing off against Curt Posey.
Joe Rivas, who was appointed to Lott’s seat on the council after his resignation, did not receive enough votes for reelection.
In Brighton, 24-year-old Brandon Dean won the mayoral election, becoming the second youngest mayor in Alabama history winning 376 of the 717 votes, beating out former mayor Eddie Cooper and current Mayor Barbara Watkins. However, as of Sept. 26, attorneys with three of the top candidates in the field of five, have requested a review of the ballots.
As reported by WBRC, “The challenge surrounds absentee ballots. Dean received 99 of the 107 cast in the race. Prior to the vote, it was revealed that more than 80 absentee ballots had been applied for at his residence.” Dean, however, said he is unconcerned with the allegations of voter fraud, despite Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill’s office investigating the results.
A judge has ordered a Oct. 17 hearing in which the findings of the investigation will be discussed.
