Here’s a serious question: do you like Good People beer? I sure do.
Here’s another: do you like the idea of saving, nurturing, and procuring a home for abused and abandoned animals instead of leaving them to die? I do. I bet you do, too, because nobody who reads Weld could be a complete monster.
Fortunately, you’re in luck if you want to combine those two things with the terrible specter of engaging in physical activity. Good People Brewing Company has teamed up with Two By Two Animal Rescue to host two runs on the evening of Tuesday the 28th to benefit the no-kill organization.
Two by Two Animal Rescue was founded by Sonya Smith in 2002 to feed strays in Helena. Since then, it’s grown into a network of foster homes across Birmingham’s southern suburbs that vet, spay/neuter and microchip their animals, providing for them until a permanent home can be found. The organization survives on donations from gracious and open-hearted people (including via PayPal at twobytworescue.com), not government support.
So here’s a chance to be one of those gracious, open-hearted people. Sign-ups for the evening’s two runs will be at 5:30 at Good People, and the runs begin at 6. The first is a conventional 3-mile trek through downtown Birmingham, while the latter is a 1-mile fun run around Railroad Park. The registration fee is fifteen dollars, which will buy you entry into the race of your choice, a t-shirt, and some good karma.
Before and after your run, you can enjoy Good People’s taproom with impunity, safe in the knowledge that, according to researchers at Granada University in Spain, beer hydrates better than water. In light of the circumstances and the season, I’d recommend the refreshing and citrusy Bearded Lady, an American wheat ale whose love for you dare not speak its name.
If you’re interested in taking a look at one of Two by Two’s animals for yourself, they showcase some of their potential pets at PetSmart in Hoover every Saturday from 12-4 p.m. Good People’s taproom, meanwhile, is open every night until 10 p.m except for Sunday, when it closes at 4.
Good People Brewing Company is located at 114 14th St. S. For more information, check their Facebook page.
